All Through The House

Many expectant moms spend hours fantasizing about their new baby. Who it will look like, how adorable the baby will be dressed up in all those carefully chosen outfits. But having a new baby at home can be overwhelming when it becomes a reality. Preparing ahead of time and having some coping strategies can go a long way towards making this time less stressful for mom.

Preparing for Baby Ahead of Time

In the week or two before the baby is due, an expectant mom should be doing a little shopping. Not just for diapers and adorable onesies, but for herself as well. A large supply of overnight sanitary napkins for the first few weeks after the baby is born is a must, and new moms should also consider buying a few packages of cheap cotton underwear for this time as well. They are comfortable and if they get leaked on and ruined, mom doesn’t have to feel bad about throwing out one of her favorite, cute pairs of undies.

Women should ask their doctors what kind of numbing sprays they recommend for the vaginal area after birth. These are typically found in the first aid section of supermarkets and pharmacies, and it’s a good idea to pick up a can ahead of time so it’s at home when she gets there.

While in that section, it may help to pick up one of those inflatable donut rings to sit on in those first few days after birth. They are good for taking the pressure off hemorrhoids and stitches while healing. Also pick up a bottle of over the counter pain reliever. Some women won’t feel the need for it, but it’s nice to have it handy, just in case.

If time allows, cooking a few dinners ahead of time and throwing them in the freezer for the first few days home from the hospital makes life a bit easier. This way the new parents don’t have to cook or worry about ordering take out.

First Days Home With a New Baby

For moms who tend to be perfectionists, the first few days after coming home from the hospital can be nerve wracking. Any schedule a couple may have had before is temporarily out the window, and it’s very difficult to keep the house perfect once the baby arrives.
