There are some common features that any anti spam filter hardware or anti spam appliance must provide and a buyer must keep in mind these points when choosing an anti spam appliance. It is essential to see whether the vendor is providing these features in the appliance or not.

  • The ease of installation of the anti spam appliance, the effort and time that is required for a quick installation.
  • Does the anti spam hardware filter provide content based filtering
  • The appliance must be platform independent i.e., synchronize with any operating system.
  • Must allow network administrator of the organization to decide upon the email policy that would be implemented through the hardware.
  • Must compel authentication of users who are sending emails.
  • Should be able to filter out any malicious code that arrives through an email.
  • Must deploy advanced security measures such as anti spyware and anti virus functions.
  • Should be able to buffer overflow attacks targeted on mail servers.
  • The amount of emails that can be filtered through the anti spam appliance.
  • Must also provide for filtering of spam in instant messaging.
  • The actual accuracy percentage of filtering spam through the filter.
  • Must always maintain and update its real time blacklist or RBL.
