Haunted Houses In Lake County Illinois

Mathias Ham House, not to be confused the haunted English Ham House, is a gothic mansion, sitting on a bluff, overlooking the Mississippi River. Shipping tycoon, Mathias Ham lived there with his family.

Mathias added a tower onto the house to watch his ships on the river. His first wife, Zerelda died in 1856. His second wife, Margaret McLean, died in 1874; Mathias, in 1889. As the years passed, witnesses in Ham House reported paranormal incidents at the estate.

Mathias Ham and the Pirates

After he lost his shipping company, it's said that Mathias Ham continued to watch the ships as they sailed in the Mississippi. One day, he saw a strange one ship, which proceeded to attack a shipping vessel in an act of piracy. Mathias mounted his horse and raced to the constable’s house. Together, they returned to the bluff, to watch the pirates’ boat.
