House Painting Preparation

Creating a beautiful counter-top need not be an expensive hassle; in fact it can be an inexpensive, and fun, endeavor. Say goodbye to that ugly laminate, and hello to a gorgeous finish!

Painted Laminate Countertop Supplies

  • Medium & fine grit sandpaper
  • Primer
  • Cleaning cloths
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Craft paints
  • Clear waterproof sealant
  • Paint rollers & craft brushes

Preparing the Surface

  1. In a well ventilated area clean the entire surface to be painted with alcohol; do not forget all the nooks and crannies and under the plastic facings.
  2. After the area is completely clean and dry use a medium grit sandpaper to rough up the entire surface. If it is difficult to sand under the edges of the trim, try folding the paper in half and cramming it under the lip.
  3. If all else fails, gently remove the plastic edging with a putty knife; it can be added back on later with glue. To reuse it; make sure to sand it just like the countertop.
  4. After finishing with the first sanding, use a rag to clean the dust off the laminate or Formica.
  5. Now is the time to lightly sand over it with a fine grit paper; make sure not to create a smooth surface, sand just enough to remove any large ridges or sharp pieces.
  6. Clean the surface again with the alcohol.
  7. When all the dust and debris have been removed and the whole area to be painted is sanded and dry; start by putting an appropriate layer of a primer on.
