Possibly the highlight on the opening day of the St Leger Festival at Doncaster was the Clipper Logistics Leger Legends Classified Stakes. Not because of it being a class 5 encounter for 3 years and older horses, or the £6,469 purse for the winner, but the list of legendary jockeys returning to the saddle for the race.

Such eminent pilots as Jamie Osborne, George Duffield, former Champion jockey Kevin Darley and French maestro Thierry Gillet lined up for the contest, alongside the most successful lady jockey of all time, American Julie Krone.

The diminutive Krone, now 48 years young it seems, was due to be appearing on the US TV reality show Survivor (better known in the UK as I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here), but instead came to Doncaster to ride the favourite, Invincible Hero for Yorkshire based trainer Declan Carroll.
